CURRENT PROJECTS

We are currently looking for sponsors to help with a project for a young married couple.  I don’t have permission yet to disclose the complete story, so at this point, I will tell you what I can:

One of them has been wheelchair-bound since early youth and is fully disabled.  The other suffers health issues and has the additional role of full-time caretaker.  In spite of this, they work as many hours as possible, often together, to make ends meet.  They are actually some of the hardest working people I have known.  On top of that, they also look out for others.  When we have needed volunteers at Project Mexico, they would joyfully show up to help stuff 10,000 envelopes!  Despite the daily difficulties they face, we never hear a single complaint from them.

They had all the same hopes and dreams that you or I have.  But this burden is a 24/7 demand and stress that I don’t know how they manage to do it and stay sane.

With financial help a number of years ago, the couple purchased a used van that had already undergone the extensive, costly changes required to lift the wheelchair inside and safely secure it to the floor on the passenger side during transit.  We’ve helped with maintenance and fix-it jobs but the van has hard miles on it and now requires some major mechanical work.  My ultimate goal would be to get the couple a newer van but that’s not feasible at this point;  so if we can just get some key things fixed, they should be okay for a while.  The couple has been able to find one of the few honest mechanics in the universe who has been good to them.  He gave me an itemized list of the work needed, work suggested, and offered a good-sized discount as well.

We need to
raise a total of $1,900 to complete all of the work.  We have at least $300 committed so far and are asking that any of you with an interest in participating do so at whatever level you feel called to.  There are no amounts too small…or too large!  If we come up short for some reason, the funds raised will still be used to make repairs in their order of priority.  When the work is done, we’ll give you a full update and, if the couple is comfortable doing so, some photos, as well.  Although they don’t say this, every day they live with this transportation problem is an extra thorn in their sides and likely a worry over the very difficult situation they’d be in if the van dies.  We all have the ability to fix this for them.

The simplest way to give is to send a check made out to St. Basil’s Storehouse or use our PayPal account.   (email address info@SaintBasilsStorehouse.org)  Your gift should be tax-deductible because we’re currently working on the non-profit registration and it will be retroactive.  However, if receiving a tax-deductible receipt is a must for you, you could also donate through your parish or ours until our registration is 100% complete.  Please contact me and we can work out the details.  Thank you in advance for any support you are able to provide for this project.

UPDATE

We were able to help gain commitments for much of the needed funds.  It took longer than we had hoped and they did get stranded once but they were THRILLED with the help and it has put  them in a much better place and they know that the Lord heard their prayers and brought an answer in the way that only He can.  Thank you for those who helped and blessings on you for sharing your wealth with those truly in need.

PLEASE PRAY & HELP IF YOU CAN:

Ismael is the oldest “boy” (now 34 yrs. old!) from St. Innocent Orphanage and a very dear part of Greg’s and my family.  Many of you know him as well. His 1st child, Alia, was born a month premature in November with many serious health problems & has spent 2 of her 4 months in the hospital. She is scheduled for open heart surgery on Friday, March 9, to close a very large hole that has created tremendous stress on her heart. Please pray for Ismael, his wife Karina, Alia, and the doctors and nurses who will care for her. Also, during this very difficult time, Ismael & his family really could use some material help. If you are able to help in that way, God bless you.  Please keep them in your prayers and feel free to share this need with others.
